Since there are many possible problems that can cause pain on the top of your foot, you should always see your foot doctor for any pain and discomfort that lasts for more than a few days.
Some common reasons for top of the foot pain include the following:
- Poorly fitting shoes—Shoes that are too tight increase the pressure and stress to the top of the foot causing swelling, painful redness and blistering. Shoes that are too loose can also cause rubbing, so always have new footwear properly fitted at least once a year.
- Diseases—Diabetes, arthritis, and gout can all cause swelling and tenderness around the bones, tendons, and other tissues on top of the foot. Numbness and tingling from peripheral nerve damage caused by diabetes are also often experienced at the top of the foot.
- Fractures—Many very small bones are located in the foot, especially on the top, and these can be easily injured by stubbing your big toe or by dropping something heavy on your foot. You can also experience hairline or stress fractures on the top of the foot that can be detected by a physical exam and confirmed with imaging tests.
- Hormone imbalance—Pain and swelling on the top of the foot are common during pregnancy or menopause and is often exacerbated by changing hormone levels.
