While nail fungus is more likely to spread in warm conditions, no matter what the temperature is outside the temperature in your shoes is still just right for the proliferation of fungal bacteria which can spread from your skin to your nails and vice versa. The fungi are also rather hardy and thrive in public areas such as shower rooms. When the fungi spread under your nail the result is not very attractive. The nail becomes brittle, yellow, and may emit a foul odor. Once nail fungus is entrenched it can be difficult to eradicate, which is why it is important to take steps to avoid getting an infection in the first place.

Some tips for preventing nail fungus include:

  • Keeping your feet clean and dry—Wash and dry your feet regularly and change socks often. It’s also a good idea to let your shoes air out between wearings by alternating them every other day or so.
  • Nail trimming—Since an ingrown toenail problem can lead to a fungal infection, it is very important to always trim your nails straight across rather than on a curve so that the edge of the nail won’t grow into the skin.
  • Breathable footwear—In addition to breathable and moisture wicking socks, it is important to wear shoes that are made with a breathable fabric such as Gortex.
  • Protect your feet—In public areas such as swimming pools, locker rooms, and showers, it is important to wear shower shoes or sandals to minimize your contact with problematic bacteria and viruses.

If you notice any changes in the color or texture of your toenails that may include a terrible odor, then it is important to see a foot specialist for proper treatment. Topical or oral antifungal medicines may be prescribed and be sure to ask about our new laser treatment for fungal nails.
