A heel spur is a small, bony protrusion that extends from the back of the heel bone. It is formed over many months from calcium deposits and is often found in conjunction with another condition called plantar fasciitis.

A recent study published by scientists at Guangzhou Dongsheng Hospital and Guangzhou Social Welfare House indicates that acupuncture may be effective at treating heel pain in people who suffer from conditions like plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis.
A researcher named Xu Xuemeng and his team conducted an experiment involving 66 patients experiencing some form of heel pain. Some of the test subjects received filiform acupuncture needle treatment, while others were treated with more conventional drugs. After six months, the scientists found that the patients given acupuncture had an effective rate of 97%, compared to 76% in the control group.
