After a series of visits with your podiatrist, your custom-made orthotic device is finally ready! You’re excited to receive this device, knowing it will provide much needed comfort, support, and mobility in your day-to-day life.

Your excitement is dampened, however, when the foot doctor presents you with a thick, ungainly, and frankly unattractive structure. You wonder, how will I ever fit this thing into my shoes? You picture a lifetime of oversized boots, a forever farewell to chic shoes.

Luckily, there are a wide variety of great options for orthotic-friendly footwear! Here’s what you need to look for when shopping for corrective shoes:

Removable insoles

A number of stylish brands including Wolky, Clarks, Naot, and Softwaves offer product lines with removable insoles. This feature allows shoes to be adjusted around your orthotics, creating a truly customized fit.

Supportive footbeds

Shoes with substantial, shock-absorbing and skid-resistant soles are ideal both for accommodating orthotics and for the general safety of your feet. Rubber and other synthetic materials are common materials for supportive footbeds, and they are typically a better fit for orthotics than smooth leather surfaces.

A wide variety of widths

It’s helpful to measure around your orthotic device in order to learn your new custom shoe size, in which width is just as important as length. A number of orthotic friendly companies will allow you to select your basic shoe size as well as your specific width from a range of options:

  • N (AA) or Narrow
  • M (B) or Medium
  • W (D) or Wide
  • WW (EE) or Extra Wide

Adjustable straps

Thanks to innovative strap design, you no longer need to pine for those cute T-Straps or Mary Janes! Just look for adjustable velcro closures that will allow you to fasten the straps around your orthotic device.

Gracious laces

Lace-up shoes are also great for adjusting the fit around orthotics. Look for classic oxford styles with forgiving materials and seamless surfaces. Feel free to purchase a few different pairs to match your wardrobe; orthotic shoes now come in a wide range of fun colors and patterns!

Ankle boots

While ankle boots are the go-to shoe for orthotics, today’s sleek, stylish models are a far cry from their bulky predecessors! They are also inter seasonal and coordinate with just about everything.
