Long-term Foot Concerns stem from wearing High Heels

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Paul Adams understands that high heels are a source of confidence for many women. Frequently wearing high heels, however, can create myriad of problems. “High-heeled shoes are an important part of every woman’s beauty arsenal… Unfortunately, wearing high heels can take a high toll on the health of one’s feet.”

Dr. Adams states that high heels with a tight toe box can increase the likelihood of corns and calluses to form: “A higher heel and a steeper slope will result in the foot sliding forward, making this problem worse. Pumps with a partial opening for the toes (peep-toe heels) also encourage the foot to slide forward increasing pressure on these vulnerable areas.”

High heels can negatively affect your feet if they do not offer enough support. If you would like to learn more, speak to Dr. Greg Khaimov, DPM of Foot and Ankle Center of Fort Lee, LLC. Dr. Khaimov will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Effects of High Heels on the Feet

High heels are popular shoes among women because they are associated with femininity.  Despite their appeal, they can cause many health problems if worn too frequently.

What parts my body will be affected by high heels?

  • Ankle Joints
  • Achilles Tendon – may shorten and stiffen with prolonged wear
  • Balls of the Feet
  • Knees – heels cause the knees to bend constantly, creating stress on them
  • Back – they decrease the spine’s ability to absorb shock, which may lead to back pain.  Also, the vertebrae of the lower back may compress.

What kinds of foot problems can develop from wearing high heels?

  • Corns
