Blister in The Sun: Summertime Foot-Care Tips
It’s summertime, and rising temperatures beckon you toward easy, airy footwear. That fresh pair of sandals, slip-ons, or breezy flats is calling out from your closet. Perhaps your eagerness to hit the streets in new shoes has already resulted in that most painful, annoying, and stroll-stifling problem: blisters.
Luckily, there are a number of simple surefire blister treatments. Here are a few tips to help you prevent and recover from summer blisters.
Keep the blister clean and sterile
Wash the blister with soap and water, and apply an antibacterial ointment at least twice a day. Avoid popping blisters unless they become extremely painful and irritated. If you must pop a blister:
- wash the area thoroughly
- make a small incision with a flame-sterilized needle
- slowly drain the fluid with gentle squeezes
- apply a dab of hydrogen peroxide
- never remove the skin over a broken blister
Blister fluid should be clear and colorless. If the fluid is yellow, that means your blister has become infected and requires the medical attention of a licensed foot doctor.
Aloe vera and Vitamin E-based lotions do wonders for healing a blister, as they contain anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial ingredients. Look for dye-free lotions that feature 100% natural ingredients.
Enjoy a soothing soak
Make a relaxing and disinfecting foot bath with:
- a tub of warm water
- a cup of Epsom salt
- a few drops of tea tree oil
Your feet will be clean, refreshed, and infection-free.
Wear a soft layer of padding
In addition to the standard bandaid, pressure-relieving gel pads and moleskin bandages can be effective for healing a blister. To prevent additional irritation, be sure to wear well-insulated socks with defined heels.
