Michael Frazier II of the Florida Gators has missed seven consecutive games due his high ankle sprain. The high scorer has been missed by his team and has not even been cleared to join practice. Coach Billy Donovan has stated that the guard has been experiencing pain while starting stopping and cutting. “I don’t anticipate him playing unless I got some miraculous diagnosis from our trainer and doctor that say he’s cleared to play,” Donovan stated.

New Balance Athletic Shoes Inc., in Boston is using 3D printers to make special running shoes for professional runners and Olympians to aid in their performance.

Using video, pressure sensors, and high pressure values designers can get a good idea as to how each specific foot meets the ground, how the feet interact with the shoe, and which area of the foot is most important during the impact.

The shoes are printed with a specific pattern of spikes in order to provide more traction when the foot hits the ground. Olympian Kim Conley wore her 3D printed shoes during the 2013 World Track Championships where she set her best personal records in 3,000 and 5,000 meter races. Reducing the pressure on the foot as well as being a lightweight shoe are things all runners consider in their shoes.

Choosing the Right Running Shoe for Your Foot Type

Although it seems simple, running is in fact a complex movement that places stress on the joints, bones, and ligaments of the body. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one million Americans are seen by doctors for symptoms of plantar fasciitis each year. Plantar fasciitis occurs when the ligament that runs from the heel bone to the base of the tones becomes inflamed; the inflammation is was usually causes the heel pain. Plantar fasciitis can occur through obesity, having too high or too low of an arch, and participation of activities where your foot or heel hits the ground repeatedly such as running. Some ways to reduce the stress placed on the ligament include: icing, taping the arch and bottom of the foot, stretching the lower extremities, wearing orthotics, and taking anti-inflammatories. What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of a the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

  •  Overpronation
  •  Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia
