Regularly changing your socks can help prevent the occurrence of fungal infections in the foot, particularly tinea pedis or Athlete’s foot. At any given time, fifteen to twenty-five percent of people have it. While one method to avoid Athlete’s foot is to wear sandals, the colder months make wearing sandals much more difficult. Changing socks will also reduce unpleasant foot odor. A statement from the U.K.’s National Health Service suggests that you should wear a clean pair of socks at least once a day to avoid smells. Bacteria are also more likely to sit on the surface of polyester and other synthetic fabric in comparison to materials such as cotton.

Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot is a very contagious form of fungus, which can infect persons usually resulting in itching, burning, dry, and flaking feet. Treatment is often difficult, because of its contagious and reoccurring nature. Tinea pedis is the fungus which causes athletes foot, and is found to survive in moist humid areas.

What is Tinea Pedi?

Treatment & Prevention

Former World no. 1 Ana Ivanovic reportedly sustained a broken toe after her defeat in the first round of the Australian Open against Lucie Hradecka. The site Vecernjih Novosti stated, “Ana has broken a toe—told by the team of the Serbian—she needed a break. Definitely she will not play in Fed Cup, maybe she will return in Dubai (tournament scheduled February 15th-21st)”. While her absence from the Federation Cup match against Austria would normally not be a cause for concern, Ivanovic must play in at least one match for her national team if she wants to participate in the Olympic Games. Ivanovic’s participation in the miniature play-off will be essential with Rio de Janeiro getting closer and closer.

What to Know About a Broken Toe

Although most people try to avoid foot trauma such as banging, stubbing, or dropping heavy objects on their feet, the unfortunate fact is that it is a common occurrence. According to Dr. John van der Steeg, head of the emergency room at Putnam Hospital Center, a record number of falls have occurred mid-January due to the bad ice storm that has hit the Northeast. “A hundred people a day we were seeing—usually it’s around the mid-seventies. We saw a pretty significant increase, and it was due to slip and fall injuries.” These injuries ranged from broken ankles to twisted knees and blows to the head. Walking across slippery, icy surfaces can be difficult, but it can be avoided if one takes shorter steps and leans forward, keeping the center of gravity over the foot.

Broken Ankles

The ankle consists of three bones- the tibia, the fibula, and the talus. The tibia and the fibula are the two bones that connect to your knees. They sit directly above the talus bone, which is protected by a fibrous membrane and allows slight movement in the ankle joint. A break usually occurs in one of these bones after the foot is twisted too far, a strong impact like jumping from a great height, or repeated stresses like running.

Diagnosis

If you suffer an ankle injury, it is essential that you receive a correct diagnosis. One of the first signs that the ankle is broken is an inability to put any weight on it. 22-year-old Carl Griffiths of Britain is unable to play for his rugby club because he is unable to find a pair of boots that fit his size 21 feet. For the past 3 years, Griffiths played for Trimsaran rugby club with size 18 boots. His toes would curl up at the ends his shoes, which have finally fallen apart after being held together with black sticky tape. Griffiths has yet to find a sports club that makes size 21 boots, causing the player to seek out outside help to find boots in his size. “Not being able to play because of not having shoes is just aggravating,” Griffiths stated.  “At least when you have an injury, you know you just can’t play for a while. But when I’m out just because of not having shoes that fit, it’s just really frustrating.”

Sometimes it may be difficult finding the right shoe size especially because shoe sizes tend to vary depending on the brand and company you are looking for. A size 6 for one brand may be a size 7 in another. Although many people know their exact shoe size, it can range within 2 sizes depending on where they shop.

So it is important not to always go for a size 7 just because you think you might be a size 7 universally. It is best to try on the shoe and walk around for a bit to see how it fits and how it feels.
