Reducing your chances of falling as you get older is an excellent way to avoid becoming one of the many elderly people who have suffered a serious injury after a bad fall. Older individuals are also more likely to be experiencing osteoporosis (bone loss), which increases the severity of breaks because bone integrity has been compromised.

6 ways to help avoid falls, fractures, and other foot and ankle injuries include the following:

  1. Wear the proper shoes and supports—Balance and coordination can be significantly improved by wearing properly-fitted shoes along with the correct custom-made orthotic inserts to improve ankle stability.
  2. Follow a healthy diet—Calcium and vitamin D are essential for healthy bones. Healthy veggies like kale and broccoli are high in vitamins and calcium. Dairy products also contain a lot of calcium. Daily sun exposure will naturally increase levels of vitamin D.
  3. Perform regular strength and flexibility exercisesExercises to strengthen the muscles and increase the flexibility of the tendons surrounding your feet and ankles will increase stability and improve balance to help avoid falling.
  4. Install safety devices and remove tripping hazards—Railings and increased lighting on stairs and in hallways will make navigation easier. Relocate or remove tripping hazards like area rugs and extension cords.
  5. Quit smoking—Quitting smoking is essential to healthy bone development.
  6. Reduce or eliminate consuming alcohol—Alcohol increases dehydration and can make you wobbly on your feet, contributing to the falling risk.

A major cause of severe injury in people over 65 is from falling. Reduce your chances of falling to stay healthy and active as you get older through proper diet and exercise and by using the right orthotic inserts. Since many older people also have osteoporosis which causes a weakening of the bones, it is important to find ways to avoid falling in the first place.

Reducing the risk of falling and decreasing bone loss will help avoid injuries and help you stay healthy as you get older.

Try these tips to help prevent falls:

  1. Orthotic inserts—Your foot doctor can correct balance problems and increase ankle stability with custom orthotic inserts and braces to help avoid falling.
  2. Get plenty of calcium and vitamins—Enough calcium and sufficient vitamin D in the diet will help nurture your bones. Yogurt, broccoli, and cauliflower are excellent dietary sources of calcium. If you don’t get much sun, then take a vitamin D supplement.
  3. Exercise regularly—Strengthening the muscles, tissues and tendons surrounding your foot and ankle bones will improve stability and decrease the chance of falling.
  4. Install safety devices—Railings and stair lighting will help to prevent accidents.
  5. Stop smoking—Quitting smoking is essential for your overall health and your bones will be stronger for it.
  6. Avoid alcohol—Alcoholic beverages cause dehydration and balance problems that can lead to a severe fall.
